According to the World Meteorological Organization, the rapid melting of glaciers could lead to serious water shortages in Central Asia. The hydrological year 2024/2025 is one of the most difficult periods for glaciers, with a sharp decrease in their mass. The Pamir, Tien Shan and Hindu Kush glaciers supply water to large rivers such as the Amu Darya, Syr Darya, Zarafshan and Panj. Therefore, the water resources, agriculture and ecosystems of the countries of the region are directly at risk.

Experts note that initially the water flow will increase, but then the river levels will decrease, leading to a long-term shortage. This process is considered a stage of decline after the "peak water".
