Cate Blanchett Joins How to Train Your Dragon 2

Australian actress Cate Blanchett will star in the upcoming live-action sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2, where she will portray Valka, the mother of the main character, Hiccup. The news was reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Blanchett has previously been closely associated with this character, having voiced Valka in the animated film trilogy that serves as the foundation for the live-action adaptation.

The new film will also see the return of Gerard Butler, who reprises his role as Stoick, Hiccup’s father, after previously voicing the character in the animated films.

As with the first live-action installment, the sequel is directed by Dean DeBlois.

The film is scheduled for a worldwide release on June 11, 2027, with Universal Pictures handling distribution.

The original animated film How to Train Your Dragon was released in 2010, followed by two feature-length sequels, an animated series, and several short films. In 2025, the studio released a live-action remake of the first film, starring Mason Thames and Nico Parker.
