Cardinals fail to elect pope on first try

The first vote in the Vatican conclave to elect a new pope failed. Black smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel, indicating that a pope had not yet been elected.

According to reports, 133 cardinals took part. One candidate must obtain 89 votes. If no one reaches the required number of votes, the two leading candidates will remain in the second round, and the winner will be determined by a simple majority.

Pope Francis died on April 21 at the age of 88.
