Marriage for individuals under the age of 18 has been completely banned in the U.S. state of California. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the relevant law on September 30, and it will take effect on January 1, 2027.
Courtney Stodden—who was married off by her family to 50-year-old actor Doug Hutchison at the age of 16—also attended the bill-signing ceremony.
Under the new regulations, minors will no longer be permitted to marry, even with parental consent or court authorization.
Between 2000 and 2021, approximately 35,000 minors entered into marriage in California; the vast majority of them were girls.
Once the new law comes into effect, the number of states establishing 18 as the minimum age for marriage without exception will reach 18. Meanwhile, Mississippi and New Mexico have no statutory minimum age for marriage.
