Bulgarian President Rumen Radev announces resignation

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has announced that he will resign in the coming days. He considers Vice President Iliyana Yotova to be a “decent head of state.” Radev cited the fact that the majority of the population still lives in poverty, the damaged political system and the control of parties, banks, businesses and the media by “puppet masters” as the main reasons for his resignation. He resigned in December 2025 amid mass protests over the Bulgarian government’s controversial budget bill. 
Rumen Radev, who has been in office since 2017, has completed Bulgaria’s European integration and membership of the Schengen area.
