Under the mass protests, the interim government of Bangladesh is headed by economist, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus. The decision to appoint 84-year-old Yunus to the post was made at a meeting with the head of state and the leaders of the "Students Against Discrimination" protest movement promoting Yunus's candidacy.
A day ago, 76-year-old Sheikh Hasina, who served as the prime minister of Bangladesh since 2009, left the country amid protests. About 300 people were killed in weeks of protests before Hasina's resignation. At least 109 of them were victims of the riots on August 5.
