Assad's rule in Syria has ended

Armed opposition groups, who began an offensive against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces in late November, seized Damascus on December 8. The rebels seized control of a prison where opponents of President Bashar al-Assad had been held since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011 and released prisoners. The Syrian army's command announced that Assad's rule had ended, and two thousand soldiers had fled to Iraq.

Assad flew out of Damascus on a private plane to an unknown destination shortly before the rebels entered the capital. According to reports, on December 7, talks were held in Doha on the issue of Bashar al-Assad's resignation and his flight to Russia, and Bashar al-Assad was trying to reach an agreement to transfer power to the rebels. According to Reuters, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad may have been killed in a plane crash.
Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Ghazi al-Jalali has announced his readiness to cooperate with any leadership elected by the Syrian people and to transfer power to the opposition.
