Yerevan is asking the court to confirm Baku's commitment to "refrain from any actions aimed at displacing Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh."
On September 28, Armenia filed a lawsuit against Azerbaijan at the UN International Court of Justice in connection with the violation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination against the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Yerevan is asking the UN court to confirm Baku's commitment to "refrain from any actions aimed at displacing Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh."
The authors of the lawsuit claim that Azerbaijan should "refrain from any measures that could lead to the violation of its obligations" under the International Convention against Discrimination. In particular, we are talking about ensuring the free exit of the population from Nagorno-Karabakh, the access of the UN and International Committee of the Red Cross to the Armenian population in the region, the restoration of the communal system and the recognition of citizenship status.
Yerevan expects Baku to "refrain from applying punitive measures against current or former political representatives or military personnel of Nagorno-Karabakh." In addition, the Armenian side included in the text of the claim the demand to withdraw the Azerbaijani military and law enforcement officers from the civilian objects in the territory occupied by them after September 19. Armenia is also demanding a ban on destroying or altering monuments of Armenian cultural heritage in the region, including monuments to the victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.
The lawsuit states that Baku must report on the measures to implement the document within one month from the date the document was submitted to the UN court, and then inform the court every three months until the decision on the case is made.
