Argentine TV presenter reports Messi's father has died
Argentine TV presenter Florencia Peña announced during a live broadcast that footballer Lionel Messi's father, Jorge Messi, had died.
Shortly after, it became clear that the news was unconfirmed and false. The presenter later admitted her mistake and apologized to Messi's family. The channel's management announced that she had fired Florencia Peña for broadcasting unverified information.
Some publications also attributed Messi's tears after the match against Algeria at the World Cup to his father's health. Messi's family said that Jorge Messi's health is under control and asked for respect for personal matters.
