The British organization UK Antarctic Heritage Trust is seeking staff to work at the Port Lockroy station in Antarctica. The position is for a six-month duration, with a monthly salary of up to 2,096 British pounds—approximately 2,500 euros.
Staff members will count penguins and their eggs, work in a museum and souvenir shop, and operate the world’s southernmost post office. The organization provides accommodation, food, and warm clothing. However, conditions are quite challenging: the station lacks running water, mobile connectivity, and medical facilities. Staff are also required to haul water, clear snow, and lift heavy loads.
Candidates must be at least 18 years old. A scientific background is not required, but physical fitness is essential. The data collected from counting penguins helps scientists study population changes and the impact of tourism.
Port Lockroy is a former British research base established in 1944. Today, it is a popular stop for Antarctic cruises; during the summer, as many as two ships carrying tourists may arrive there each day.
