Another Museum Robbery in France: €90,000 Worth of Coins Stolen

A major theft occurred at the “Maison des Lumières Denis Diderot” museum in the French city of Langres. According to police reports, burglars broke into the museum overnight on October 20 and stole gold and silver coins valued at around €90,000.

Museum staff discovered the break-in the next morning, finding doors forced open and display cases shattered. The stolen coins date back to 1790–1840 and were discovered during restoration work in 2011. They were considered part of France’s Enlightenment-era economic heritage.

Investigators believe the theft was carefully planned and carried out by professionals familiar with the museum’s security system.

The incident took place just one day after a high-profile robbery at the Louvre in Paris, where jewelry worth €88 million linked to Napoleon’s era was stolen. Authorities suspect a possible connection between the two heists.

Following the recent events, French law enforcement has increased security measures in museums across the country.
