A document on cultural heritage was signed between the governments of Uzbekistan and the United States in Tashkent. The agreement "On the introduction of import restrictions in the categories of archaeological and ethnological materials of Uzbekistan" was signed by the Director of the Cultural Heritage Agency of Uzbekistan, Bahadir Abdukarimov, and the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the USA to our country, Jonathan Henik. "This agreement serves as a basis for the development of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United States on the prevention and return of illegal circulation of museum objects and cultural assets," said Bahadir Abdukarimov. "Today is a historic day, because Uzbekistan became the first country in Central Asia to sign an agreement on cultural assets with the United States. In addition to Uzbekistan, 25 other countries of the world have signed similar agreements with the United States. Protecting cultural heritage, art and works of art is not an easy task. That is why this agreement is a very important step today. The US government allocated 1 million dollars for the protection and restoration of cultural heritage sites in Uzbekistan. We want to be a partner in your efforts to protect the cultural heritage of Uzbekistan and show its rich history to the world," said Jonathan Henik. According to the press service of the Agency of Cultural Heritage, the agreement sets restrictions on the prevention of looting of archaeological and ethnological materials and the import of objects included in the special list. In addition, it creates a basis for holding joint exhibitions aimed at training and improving the skills of specialists in this direction, and promoting the material cultural heritage. The signing of the cultural heritage document is the result of long-term negotiations between Tashkent and Washington. The United States supports the protection of Uzbekistan's cultural heritage mainly through the US Ambassador's Fund for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (AFCP). Since 2001, the Foundation has provided funds for many projects in Uzbekistan, including the preservation and maintenance of historical monuments and collections in Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand and Tashkent.
