Following reports of a potential plague outbreak in Russia's Irkutsk region, the US Embassy urged Americans in the country to leave Russia immediately. However, the spread of the plague has not yet been officially confirmed.
Concerns intensified after the death of 28-year-old Darya Shipilova, who worked at the Anti-Plague Institute in Irkutsk. Russian officials attributed her death to "pneumonia of unknown origin." Nearly 200 people who had been in contact with her were placed under medical observation, but none tested positive for the plague.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Russia to provide more information about the incident to the international community. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that he would discuss the situation with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone "soon."
The World Health Organization has requested additional information from Russian officials. For now, the organization assesses the risk to Russia and other regions as low, and the risk to Europe as very low.
For its part, Russia has stated that no cases of the plague have been recorded in Irkutsk and has urged citizens to rely solely on official information from Rospotrebnadzor.
