On May 15, the XXXIV Meeting of Representatives of the Parties to the Agreement on the International Railway Transit Tariff (MTT) opened in the Turkmen capital.

The current meeting is devoted to the improvement and updating of the MTT document, which is an agreement between two dozen countries, establishing uniform rules and tariffs for the transport of goods by rail in transit mode.

Entered into force in 1997, the agreement promotes the development of transport infrastructure, an increase in the volume of freight traffic, an increase in the competitiveness of railway transport and closer cooperation between the countries participating in the agreement.

“This event is important because it takes place in Turkmenistan, one of the key member states of the Organization for Cooperation between Railways,” Zubayda Aspayeva, Chairwoman of the OSJD Commission on Freight Traffic, commented to ORIENT.

“All participants have gathered here to discuss issues related to tariffs for transit cargo transportation and the establishment of uniform tariff rules in the vast Asian space. This is of key importance for all OSJD member countries. And Turkmenistan is one of our most important strategic partners in transportation from Europe to Asia.”

Aspayeva also noted that the solution of the issues outlined on the agenda will contribute to an increase in the volume of traffic along the international transport corridors "North-South", "East-West" and others, as well as expanding the range of goods transported.

On the first day of the meeting, which will run until May 18, the parties agreed on the agenda and composition of the drafting group, which will prepare a draft Protocol of the event.
