Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced his resignation on September 27. He explained his decision by stating his intention to run in the snap parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25 and contend for the position of prime minister.
Vučić’s presidential powers will temporarily pass to Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić. Under the Constitution, Vučić cannot run for a third presidential term. He had been serving as President of Serbia since 2017; his second term was due to end in May 2027.
If Vučić wins the snap elections, he could become a candidate for the post of prime minister.
