Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 3.7 model – “Claudius” – was launched with $1,000 in capital and full authority to run a mini-store inside a San Francisco office. It was supposed to set product prices, place orders, and even monitor profits.
But the experiment quickly took a comical turn. Claudius took the employee’s joke seriously, bought $2,000 worth of tungsten cubes, handed out useless discount codes, tried to charge for free drinks, and sold products at a loss. The capital dropped from $1,000 to $800.
