The execution of 50-year-old Christa Pike, who was sentenced to death in the U.S. state of Tennessee, was unsuccessful. Despite being administered two doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital, she survived. The woman was taken to a hospital.
The execution was scheduled to take place on September 30. However, one hour before it was to be carried out, a federal appeals court temporarily halted the process; this decision was later overturned, and the execution proceeded.
The Tennessee Department of Correction stated that the established protocol was followed during the execution. According to the department's statement, the current protocol does not provide for additional measures following the procedure that was performed.
State officials have launched an investigation into the incident. The execution regarding Pike's future fate has been postponed until the end of 2026.
Pike was found guilty of killing 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in 1995, when she was 18, and was sentenced to death in 1996. She was the only female inmate on death row in Tennessee.
