A woman from a migrant family could become the mayor of Berlin for the first time.

In the election held in Berlin, Germany, the Die Linke party secured first place with 25.7 percent of the vote. This marked the party's best-ever result in Berlin's history.
The party's 45-year-old candidate, Elif Eralp, comes from a family of Turkish migrants. During her election campaign, she focused primarily on issues regarding housing and high rental costs.
However, because Die Linke failed to secure an outright majority, it is not yet certain that Eralp will become the Mayor of Berlin. To achieve this, she must form a coalition with other parties and win the support of a majority of the Berlin parliament's deputies.
If Eralp assumes the position, she will become Berlin's first governing mayor of migrant background and the first female mayor of Turkish descent.
