An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 occurred in Morocco. As a result, 296 people have died so far, Al-Arabiya newspaper reports, citing the official statement of the government. Earlier, the mass media reported the death of 96 people.
According to the latest information, 153 people were injured. Search and rescue operations are ongoing. More than 30 buildings were destroyed. Hospitals are overflowing with earthquake victims.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 10 kilometers deep and 77 kilometers southwest of the city of Marrakesh, where 839 thousand people live. Officials are worried about the return of the earthquake.
The last time a strong earthquake occurred in Morocco was in 2004. Its magnitude was 6.5, when about 600 people died.
