Strong Earthquake Strikes Panama
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck southern Panama on October 9. As a result, some buildings were damaged or collapsed, and thousands of people took to the streets. There are currently no reports of casualties or injuries. Reuters reported the news.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 12.6 kilometers. Its epicenter was located approximately 200 kilometers from the capital, Panama City. More than 40 aftershocks were subsequently recorded.
Due to the strong tremors, people were evacuated from some buildings in the capital, and flights at Tocumen International Airport were temporarily suspended. Airport operations later resumed.
President Raul Mulino visited the areas affected by the earthquake. Power outages were reported in several provinces of the country.
The U.S. Geological Survey estimated that the economic damage resulting from the earthquake could reach between 1% and 10% of Panama's GDP.
