Senator Rustam Kalanov proposed considering the use of castration as a measure against individuals who commit sexual crimes against children in Uzbekistan.
He put forward this proposal during a plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis while a law aimed at protecting children from violence was being discussed. Noting that surgical castration is used for such crimes in some other countries, Kalanov suggested considering this measure for Uzbekistan as well.
Senate Chairperson Tanzila Norbaeva, however, stated that the practical results of the newly adopted law should be monitored first, and that legislation could be further improved later if the need arose.
It is worth noting that on October 2, the Senate approved a law providing for sentences of up to 25 years in prison or life imprisonment for certain sexual crimes committed against children under the age of 14.
