A powerful earthquake of 7.5 magnitude struck Japan, a tsunami threat was announced
A 7.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded off the northeastern coast of Japan on April 20. The earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean, near Iwate Prefecture, at a depth of 10 km. The tremors were also felt in Tokyo.
The country's meteorological agency has declared a tsunami threat for Iwate, Aomori, Miyagi and southern Hokkaido. Tsunami waves are said to be up to 3 meters high.
Japanese authorities have urged residents to evacuate to safer, higher areas. High-speed train traffic in the area has been temporarily suspended. There have been no reports of casualties or injuries so far.
