Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the former deputy prime minister of Singapore, won the country's presidential election with 70.4 percent of the vote. This was reported by the Xinhua news agency.

His presidential rivals Ng Kok Song and Tan Kin Lian received 15.72 percent and 13.88 percent of the vote respectively. A total of over 2.48 million Singaporeans participated in the elections.

We remind you that on May 23 of this year, the President of Singapore, Halima Yaqub, came to Uzbekistan on a two-day state visit. On May 24, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev warmly welcomed Singaporean leader Halima Yaqub at the Koksaroy residence, and she also went to Samarkand on the "Afrosiyob" train.

In 2017, Halima Yaqub resigned from the position of Speaker of the Parliament in order to promote her candidacy for the presidential election. According to Singapore law, only Malays could run for that year's elections. Because since 1970, Malays have not been in this position. In this way, the competition becomes much less, and in the end, Halima Yaqub is appointed as the president of the country without much difficulty and opposition. He was appointed precisely because there were no other candidates who met the requirements.

After that, a group of citizens in Singapore still accuses him of being in office unfairly. For example, one of the former presidents of the country, Tan Cheng Bok, calls Halima "the most controversial president in the history of Singapore."

Halima Yaqub answered these words as follows: "I can say that I promise to do my best to serve the people of Singapore. This will not change whether the elections are held or not."
