A fire in a nightclub in Spain killed 11 people

11 people died after a fire broke out in a night club in the city of Murcia in the south-east of Spain.
The fire broke out in the Teatre night club in Atalayas district around 6 o'clock in the morning local time on October 1.

Officials said the death toll could rise. Emergency services reported that they were looking for several missing people.

"We are in terror," Murcia Mayor Jose Balesta said on the Spanish 24h TV channel. He declared three days of mourning in the city.

According to the mayor, relatives of those who were in the club gathered at the scene of the incident.

It is not known what caused the fire, but the fire started while the club was still open to customers.

Footage posted on social media pages of the Murcia fire department shows how firefighters are fighting the fire that engulfed the club. The fire completely destroyed the roof of the building.

According to emergency services, firefighters were able to get inside around 08:00 and found four bodies, about 40 minutes later two more bodies were found.

Four victims were hospitalized - they were poisoned by carbon monoxide. A consultation was organized for the victims at the local sports complex.

Murcia's mayor's office expressed its "deep regret" over the incident and expressed its condolences to the victims.
