A dangerous virus is spreading in Ethiopia

Marburg virus is spreading in southern Ethiopia. This virus is extremely dangerous and causes high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and internal bleeding. Experts say the fatality rate can reach 25–80%.

According to the World Health Organization, the virus has so far been detected in 9 patients. The identified strain is similar to those previously observed in East Africa. The government has launched investigation and control measures in the Jinka area. Before this, 10 people died from the virus in Tanzania, and 15 people in Rwanda in 2024.

There is no approved vaccine against Marburg yet, but symptom treatment and preventing dehydration can help save patients’ lives. Last year, an experimental vaccine was tested.
