A 65-year-old man in the Russian city of Balakovo has had a large stone weighing about 1 kilogram surgically removed from his bladder. The patient was hospitalized in critical condition, with signs of kidney failure and internal bleeding. The stone occupied almost the entire bladder cavity. Doctor Oleg Yakimov said that such cases are rare: in his 30 years of practice, this is the third such large stone he has encountered. The patient is currently in intensive care. He is awaiting further tests and may need another operation to restore the function of his urinary tract.

Doctors say that the stone formation is likely caused by age-related changes in the prostate gland and impaired urination.
