Archaeologists have found a thousand-year-old mummy in the wealthy Miraflores district south of Lima, the capital of Peru, Reuters reports, citing Mirella Ganoza, head of the team of archaeologists.

"This is the body of an elderly man sitting with his legs bent," Ganoza told the agency. "The mummy has long hair, and her jaw is almost completely preserved."

The remains were found in the Uak Puklian area of the district, the agency writes. Next to the body, archaeologists found pottery, cloth and other items, Ganoza said.

The person who became the mummy may have lived a thousand years ago, during the heyday of the Ichsma culture, which developed on the central coast of modern Peru before the arrival of the Incas, the expert explained.

Ichsma is an indigenous South American culture and state that originated in the Lurin Valley south of Lima. The state of Ichsma appeared in 1100 BC. In the years 1440-1470, it was occupied by the Inca Empire.
