According to the World Health Organization, the bodies of about 4,000 people who died in the floods in Derna have been identified so far.
The flood was caused by the bursting of the dams of two water reservoirs due to a strong storm and rain.
The search for more than 10,000 missing persons continues in Derna. Rescuers and relatives of missing people have not given up hope of finding them alive under the rubble and layers of mud that are several meters high in some places, Euronews reports.
The dilapidated dams were built in the 1970s, although money was allocated every year, but no serious attention was paid to keeping the dams in working condition. Representatives of the local population claim that the authorities were aware of this threat, but did not take any measures. The public prosecutor of Libya promised that those who acted coldly would be brought to justice.
The head of the Emergency Situations Department of the Government of National Unity of Libya noted that after the flood in Derna, 890 houses were completely destroyed, and more than 1,500 houses were partially damaged.
It is also reported that 150 people were poisoned by consuming contaminated water in Derna after the man-made disaster.
Let us remind you that the number of victims of the deadly flood in the city of Derna, located on the coast of Libya, has reached 11,300 people. Search operations are ongoing in the disaster area. Another 10,100 people are considered missing.
