A U.S. federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to open registration for the 2027 Green Card Lottery. The ruling follows the State Department’s failure to begin accepting applications for the lottery during the scheduled period. Judge Jinsook Ohta has directed the State Department to announce a registration period and provide at least 30 days for the submission of electronic applications. Through this program, up to 55,000 visas are allocated to citizens of countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. However, being selected in the lottery does not automatically guarantee entry into the U.S. or the receipt of a Green Card; winners must still meet all established requirements to obtain a visa. According to the court’s decision, the State Department must process the documents of selected applicants until either the available visas are exhausted or the 2027 fiscal year concludes. The Green Card Lottery was established by the U.S. Congress in 1990. Information regarding registration dates and the application process for the 2027 program should be monitored through official announcements from the State Department.
