A surprising incident occurred in Uzbekistan’s Navoi region when a shop mistakenly issued a receipt worth 2 billion soums (about $160,000) for just two peppers. According to the Ministry of Justice, the error happened due to a cashier’s mistake — the actual price of the peppers was only 20,000 soums (around $1.60), but an extra set of zeros turned it into a massive bill.

As a result, the shop owner was shown to have a large and incorrect tax debt. When he contacted the local tax office to correct the error, officials replied that issued receipts could not be edited.

The case went to court, which ruled that the tax office’s refusal was unlawful and sided with the entrepreneur. The incident serves as a reminder of how a simple human error can cause major problems in automated accounting systems.
