2.4 million girls in Afghanistan denied access to education

Nearly 2.4 million girls in Afghanistan are being denied access to secondary education. UNESCO has called on the Taliban authorities to lift restrictions imposed on women and girls.

According to the data, the number of girls denied secondary education has increased by 200,000 compared with 2025. If the restrictions remain in place, this figure could reach nearly 4 million by 2030.

In 2022, the Taliban banned girls from attending secondary schools and women from studying at universities. A number of other restrictions have also been imposed on women, including:

▪️ working in UN offices;
▪️ men making clothes for women;
▪️ women seeking medical treatment from male doctors;
▪️ women going to hospitals alone;
▪️ women visiting amusement parks;
▪️ women and families entering certain restaurants with gardens or green spaces;
▪️ broadcasting advertisements featuring women’s voices;
▪️ women entering government offices without a burqa;
▪️ women bargaining with male sellers;
▪️ women teaching boys.

According to UNESCO, restrictions on female teachers could lead to a shortage of more than 11,000 qualified female teachers in Afghanistan by 2030.
