17 children die in India after taking cough syrup

In India’s Madhya Pradesh state, 17 children have died after consuming a cough syrup called Coldrif. Another 11 children are in critical condition. All of them suffered from kidney failure and severe brain damage.

Tests revealed that the syrup contained a toxic substance known as diethylene glycol, which binds to brain tissue and cannot be expelled from the body. While the permissible limit is 0.1%, the sample contained 48.6% — nearly 500 times higher than allowed. Local authorities have begun collecting the medicine from pharmacies and homes.

According to Uzbekistan’s Center for Pharmaceutical Product Safety, Coldrif syrup is not registered or used in Uzbekistan.

❗️It is worth recalling that a similar tragedy occurred in Uzbekistan, where 69 children died and 18 were left disabled after consuming the Indian-made cough syrup “Dok-1 Maks”.
