Low-income people and families with many children are being evicted from a dormitory in Almaty to accommodate students there
ASTANA, September 15 – Sputnik. In Almaty, they want to evict dormitory residents in order to accommodate students there. The house in which these families lived for many years was transferred to the Almaty College of Fashion and Design, Channel 31 reports.
“Now all I can do is go to the neighboring house, agree to live in the basement, or at the station,” noted Almaty resident Serik Kenzhebekov.
Another resident, Mahilyam Ismakova, with health problems, also asked not to be evicted from the hostel.
“I am a heart patient, I am registered. Please, I beg you to consider it again and not throw us all out into the street. We are people. If fashion house students are people, then we are people just like them, and we have not been living here for a year and not two,” she said.
Even though people only pay for utilities, they treat this building as if it were their own home. The entrances are clean, nothing is broken. They try to evict tenants every year. Representatives of the college commented on the relocation situation.
“In November 2022, a decree was signed. There is a requirement to solve the problem of the shortage of places in dormitories for students. The Akimat of Almaty in July 2023 issued a resolution on the transfer of this dormitory to the college of fashion and design. We are implementing the akim’s decree and solving the issue of the shortage of places,” - explained college lawyer Ruslan Bazarbaev.
In case of their eviction, people asked the akimat to help them with housing.
