Gabriella Rotberg, a 17-year-old high school student from the U.S., has created a genetically modified tomato variety designed to taste like a hamburger. Her project, "Impossible Vines," has been granted a U.S. patent.
She used genetic modification techniques to enable the tomatoes to produce "heme"—a compound responsible for the characteristic flavor of meat. Artificial intelligence was also utilized in the project.
Gabriella hopes that these tomatoes could serve as an alternative food source for populations in regions where meat is expensive or scarce.
However, the project is still in the experimental stage. The extent to which the tomatoes actually resemble the taste of a hamburger, as well as their nutritional profile, remains to be evaluated.
