Do you know why only players under the age of 23 play in the Olympics?
Once upon a time, hundreds of years ago, the World Cup was not yet competitive, and the Olympic Games were the pinnacle of football. In the 1920s, FIFA recognized the Olympic Games as a world championship, but only amateurs could play in the Olympics, which FIFA did not like, and these issues complicated the situation. Then FIFA launched the World Cup, open to all, leaving the Olympic tournament behind.
Thus, a number of disputes began between FIFA and the International Olympic Committee. Following these disagreements, football was dropped from the Olympic program in 1932. In 1992, the under-23 rule was introduced to the Olympic Games. In 1996, three older players joined. These restrictions have remained in force ever since.
