"Bread and Roses" is a documentary film about Afghan women
Director Sahra Mani has made a documentary about Afghan women called “Bread and Roses.” The film stars American actress Jennifer Lawrence and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai. The film was shot in Kabul, Afghanistan. After the film was completed, all members of the team, including Afghan women, left the country for safety reasons.
The film has three main characters - a dentist who was forced to give up his job, a migrant who fled abroad, and a civil servant who is struggling to regain his independence, having lost his job and independence. The main context of the project is to study what happened to people's lives when the Taliban came to power, and about the courageous but under-resourced struggle.
Jennifer Lawrence said that her family urged her to abandon the project because of the danger of the work, but she replied, “Of course it is dangerous. But there are 20 million women whose lives are at risk.”
The premiere took place on November 22.
